"My older brother and I lived with our parents on a cotton farm about half-way between Amherst and Sudan, about fifty miles northwest of Lubbock, and close to the center of the South Plains area of Texas. Living on the farm had its blessings, such as space, land, sky, quietness , and seeing stars at night. The negative points were distance from stores, school, church, and friends.

"My mother saw to it that I had piano lessons, which meant driving me to the piano studio every week for eight years until I turned fourteen and got my driver's license. I loved playing piano and singing. I was never lonely with music as my best friend. From the time I was eight, I sang specials in church. When I was about twelve, I began playing piano in church, too. When I played or sang publicly, my dad became more nervous than I did!
"I also loved to read. Once, I kept a record of the books I read in the summer. The list included twenty-seven, closed-door romantic fiction novels by the Queen of Romance, Barbara Cartland.
"After high-school graduation, I went to university to continue my studies in music. In a couple of years, I dropped out of school to have a family. One son and one daughter later, I returned to university to continue studies in music education. After graduation, I moved to Borger, TX, where I taught general music including singing, choir, music history, UIL music memory, guitar, and recorders for twenty-three years." |
Many have asked how the idea of the glops came about. Elayne's older sister needed help with a college assignment. Elayne, 14 years old at the time, helped her sister by quickly writing a short story about a funny, inquisitive little creature. About twenty-five years later, Elayne's mother, Betty, was looking in some files and found the short story. Betty had an idea, but what would Elayne think? "Go for it, Mom," she said. That was when Betty expanded the story and published it.

"I have loved books from the time I was a toddler. I would sit still for long periods of time when anyone read to me. My extensive vocabulary drew the attention of my third grade teacher, who placed me in an advanced class. At bedtime, Mother and I would read from a series of books until the last page and immediately begin another series."
